Discover the striking Hicks Yew, a dense, columnar evergreen shrub with elegant ascending branches. Its unique red fleshy fruit and lush dark green foliage make it a standout addition to any landscape |
Taxus x media 'Hicksii', commonly known as the Hicks Yew, is a dense, narrowly columnar evergreen shrub with an ascending branching habit. This yew cultivar is a hybrid between the English Yew (Taxus baccata) and the Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata). Unlike some other yew varieties, the Hicks Yew is a female plant, producing attractive red, fleshy fruit instead of cones. The foliage of the Hicks Yew is dark green on the upper side and a lighter green underneath, creating an elegant contrast. It's important to note that all parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested, so care should be taken, especially around children and pets. Despite this toxicity, the Hicks Yew remains a popular choice for landscapes due to its compact, upright growth form and year-round evergreen presence. The dense, columnar habit of this yew makes it well-suited for hedges, screens, and formal plantings, where its rich color and structured appearance can provide visual interest and structure in the garden.
